Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 14: Reinforcing the need for elephant conservation and habitat protection, the Middle Andaman Forest Division observed World Elephant Day 2026 on August 13 at Parnashala Camp under the Rangat Range, bringing together forest officials, veterinary experts and mahouts for a series of awareness and welfare-focused activities.
The programme centred on promoting awareness about elephant conservation, welfare, habitat protection and the crucial ecological role elephants play in maintaining the balance of forest ecosystems. The observance began with an Elephant Food Plantation at Parnashala Camp, highlighting the importance of ensuring adequate food resources and preserving suitable habitats for elephants.
Addressing the gathering, Divisional Forest Officer, Middle Andaman, Vikas Yadav, spoke about the significance of World Elephant Day and stressed the need to strengthen conservation initiatives and welfare measures for elephants. He highlighted the importance of sustained efforts to protect elephant habitats and support their long-term well-being.
Senior Veterinary Officer Dr. Sam Varghese, who attended as the guest of honour, delivered a presentation covering various aspects of elephant welfare. The session focused on issues related to elephant care and management as part of the awareness programme.
To encourage greater understanding among frontline handlers, the Forest Division organised a quiz competition for mahouts. The competition aimed to enhance their knowledge of elephant management, welfare, behaviour and conservation practices.
The programme also featured an exhibition and an Elephant Decoration Competition. During the event, elephants were adorned with garlands, flowers, tilak and other traditional decorations as part of the celebrations.
A documentary showcasing the ecological importance of elephants and the close relationship between mahouts and the animals was screened for participants. The film highlighted the bond shared between elephants and their caretakers while reinforcing messages on conservation and responsible animal welfare.
Through plantation activities, educational sessions and community participation, the World Elephant Day observance underscored the continued focus on protecting elephant habitats and promoting awareness about conservation and welfare measures in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
