New SEZs in Puducherry Signal Wider Growth Prospects for Andaman and TAP Region

Date:

New Delhi, May 30: The Union Government has approved and notified two new Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Puducherry, a move aimed at accelerating industrial growth, expanding exports and strengthening employment generation, while also highlighting the growing economic momentum across the Tamil Nadu-Andaman-Puducherry (TAP) Region.

The approvals were granted by the Board of Approval for Special Economic Zones under the Department of Commerce during its meeting held on May 29. The newly notified projects are expected to support investment-led development and reinforce the government’s broader strategy of promoting manufacturing, technology and services through SEZ-driven growth.

According to an official statement, the two projects mark a significant development in Puducherry’s industrial expansion plans and are expected to create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities while attracting substantial private investment.

One of the approved projects is an Information Technology and Information Technology Enabled Services (IT/ITES) Special Economic Zone proposed by Oulgaret Municipality at Thattanchavady village in Oulgaret Taluk. The project assumes national significance as it will become the first SEZ in India to be developed by an Urban Local Body in the form of a municipality.

The IT/ITES SEZ will be established over an area of 8.623 hectares with a proposed investment of Rs 725 crore. The project is expected to generate approximately 3,500 direct and indirect jobs.

The second approval pertains to a Multi-Sector Special Economic Zone proposed by the Pondicherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation (PIPDIC) at Karasur village in Villianur Taluk. The project will be developed across 86.2457 hectares with an estimated investment of Rs 1,250 crore.

Officials stated that the multi-sector SEZ is expected to create employment opportunities for around 5,000 people through both direct and indirect avenues. The project is intended to support industrial diversification and expand the economic base of the Union Territory.

The government noted that the approvals reflect increasing industrial activity across the TAP Region, comprising Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Puducherry. The region has witnessed growing participation from diverse sectors, with large-scale projects contributing to investment, job creation and economic development.

The official statement said the notifications form part of a wider national strategy to strengthen India’s industrial, manufacturing, technology and services ecosystem through diversified SEZ-led development. The approach aims to improve economic resilience, enhance export competitiveness, attract fresh investment and generate employment opportunities.

The newly approved SEZs are expected to contribute to these objectives while reinforcing the role of the TAP Region, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in India’s evolving industrial and economic landscape.
