Sri Vijaya Puram, April 21: A new infrastructure project aimed at improving road connectivity and public safety in Calicut Ward No. 06 has been initiated with the laying of a foundation stone under the Zilla Parishad, South Andaman. The project focuses on the renovation of an existing cement concrete (CC) road and the construction of a protection wall in a residential stretch.
The development work involves upgrading the CC road from the village road leading to Palani’s residence and includes building a protection wall near Chelliaha’s house. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to address local infrastructure needs in rural areas under the jurisdiction of the Zilla Parishad.
The foundation stone for the project was laid on April 21, 2026, by Prakash Adhikari, Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad, South Andaman. The ceremony was attended by Rajanish Singh, IAS, Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Parishad, along with other elected representatives and officials.
Among those present were Boominathan, Up-Adhyaksh of the Zilla Parishad; D. Satya Narayan, Up-Pramukh of Panchayat Samiti, Prothrapur; T. Yaghambaram, Pradhan of Gram Panchayat, Calicut; and P. Tamilselvi, Ward Member of Calicut. Local residents also participated in the event, reflecting community involvement in the development process.
The project is expected to address long-standing concerns related to road conditions and safety in the area. The inclusion of a protection wall is aimed at preventing potential damage or hazards along the roadside stretch, particularly in vulnerable sections.
Local representatives present at the event acknowledged the importance of timely execution of such works and stressed the need for sustained focus on rural infrastructure. They highlighted that improved road conditions directly impact daily mobility, access to services, and overall quality of life for residents.
The Zilla Parishad has been undertaking multiple initiatives to strengthen infrastructure across South Andaman, with a focus on basic amenities in village areas. The Calicut Ward project is one among several works being taken up to improve connectivity and public facilities.
Officials reiterated that such projects are being implemented to meet the growing needs of rural populations and to ensure better access within village networks. The emphasis remains on addressing specific local requirements through targeted development works.
The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks to all participants, including officials, representatives, and community members who attended the foundation stone laying ceremony.
