Borong Village Infrastructure Revival Gains Momentum After Years of Neglect

Key infrastructure upgrades proposed for Borong village expected to improve connectivity, drinking water availability and basic amenities

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), April 11: After decades of isolation, Borong village in North Andaman is witnessing the first signs of long-awaited development, with key infrastructure proposals for road connectivity, water supply, and public services now under active consideration and initial groundwork underway.

Situated under Mayabunder Gram Panchayat, Ward No. 12, the village was established in the early 1970s with 32 families. Today, with a population of around 160, Borong is poised for transformation as the administration moves to address longstanding gaps in connectivity and essential services.

One of the most significant developments is the proposed construction of a 4.5-km rural road connecting the village to Hari Bay. The Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) has confirmed that the proposal has been submitted under the Annual Plan, marking a crucial step toward ensuring all-weather access. Initial land clearing activities have already begun, signalling progress on the ground, while necessary approvals, including forest clearance, are in process.

At present, access to the village is through a kutcha track passing through forest stretches and a nallah. With plans for a permanent road and improved crossing infrastructure, residents are hopeful that daily travel, movement of goods, and access to education will soon become safer and more reliable.

Parallel efforts are also underway to strengthen water infrastructure in the village. While a pipeline currently supplies water from a natural spring source, APWD has proposed a comprehensive water supply scheme to ensure safe and treated drinking water. The plan includes the construction of a 6-metre diameter RCC well, a water treatment plant, pump house, pipelines, and storage facilities. Land allocation for the project is under consideration, bringing the village closer to a sustainable water solution.

In the education sector, the need for improved infrastructure has been acknowledged, with attention drawn to the condition of the primary school and staff quarters. With connectivity improvements on the horizon, better access for teachers and students is expected to enhance attendance and continuity in schooling.

Healthcare access, too, is likely to see improvement as administrative focus increases on remote habitations. The recognition of existing gaps is seen as a step toward ensuring regular outreach services and emergency response mechanisms in the near future.

Digital connectivity remains limited at present, but with infrastructure expansion and increased administrative attention, residents are optimistic about better communication access going forward.

Housing support under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has already provided permanent structures for residents, forming a foundation upon which essential services are now being planned and developed.

The concerns of Borong was brought to light by the Member of Parliament Bishnu Pada Ray highlighting the village’s needs and pushing for expedited action. The involvement of senior officials and monitoring at the administrative level now, have added momentum to the development process.

For the residents of Borong, these developments mark a turning point. While challenges remain, the combination of policy attention, planned investments, and early groundwork signals a shift from years of neglect toward a more connected and sustainable future.
