Sri Vijaya Puram, May 26: The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has announced a series of events across the islands to mark the ‘12th International Day of Yoga-2026’, with programmes ranging from heritage yoga sessions and beach yoga to tribal outreach camps and mass demonstrations.
According to a press release issued on Sunday, the month-long activities will culminate in the main International Day of Yoga event on June 21, with yoga demonstrations scheduled simultaneously at multiple locations across the islands.
The celebrations began earlier this month with a Training of Trainers programme at the Yoga Hall of the AYUSH Hospital at Junglighat. The training programme, being conducted from May 15 to May 30, focuses on preparing instructors and participants in the Common Yoga Protocol.
One of the major attractions in the schedule will be the Heritage Yoga event planned at the historic Cellular Jail National Memorial on May 26 between 7 am and 8 am.

The administration has also scheduled a special yoga session for jail inmates at Prothrapur Jail on May 28, followed by a Chandranamaskar programme at Marina Park in Sri Vijaya Puram on May 30.
Beach Yoga activities will be organised at Chidiya Tapu on June 6, while a Tribal Yoga Camp is planned at Strait Island on June 10 as part of efforts to expand outreach to different sections of society.
Flash mob awareness programmes are also scheduled at Bambooflat, Junglighat Junction and Bathubasti during June 12 and 13 to promote awareness about yoga and healthy living among the public.
The administration has additionally planned a dedicated yoga session for autistic children at CRC Brookshabad on June 17.
Officials said the programme aims to encourage wider participation and promote the health and wellness benefits associated with yoga across communities and age groups.
Apart from the scheduled events, yoga instructors attached to AYUSH wellness centres across the islands are conducting training sessions on the Common Yoga Protocol, Y-Break, Yoga for antenatal mothers and general yoga sessions in different parts of the Union Territory.
The International Day of Yoga has evolved into one of the largest public wellness campaigns globally since its adoption by the United Nations in 2014 following India’s proposal.
In the islands, yoga activities have seen increasing participation in recent years, particularly through community-based events organised at beaches, public spaces, educational institutions and heritage locations.
The administration has encouraged residents to participate in the events and observe the International Day of Yoga as a collective movement promoting physical and mental well-being.
Officials said the final mass yoga demonstrations on June 21 would be held simultaneously at various locations across the islands between 7 am and 8 am.
