Andaman Braces for Heavy Rain, Lightning and Strong Winds Amid Weather Warning

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 26: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to witness thunderstorms, gusty winds, lightning and heavy rainfall over the coming days, with weather authorities issuing a fresh alert for multiple parts of the Union Territory till May 31.

According to an official weather advisory issued on Sunday, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds with speeds of 30–40 kmph and lightning are likely to occur at one or two places across the islands on May 26 and 27.

The intensity of the weather system is expected to increase from May 28 onwards, with thunderstorms accompanied by stronger winds of 40–50 kmph and lightning likely at isolated locations over the islands.

Authorities have also forecast heavy rainfall ranging between 7 cm and 11 cm at one or two places across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between May 29 and May 31.

The warning comes amid changing weather conditions associated with the advancing southwest monsoon over the Bay of Bengal region. The islands frequently experience unstable weather patterns during this period, including sudden rain spells, squally winds and thunderstorms.

Officials have advised residents, fishermen and commuters to remain cautious during the forecast period, especially in coastal and low-lying areas vulnerable to waterlogging and rough weather conditions.

The advisory is particularly significant for inter-island commuters and small boat operators, as gusty winds and reduced visibility during thunderstorms can impact marine movement and ferry operations.

Authorities are also expected to closely monitor conditions at vulnerable points prone to flooding, tree fall incidents and traffic disruptions caused by heavy rain and strong winds.

Over the years, pre-monsoon and monsoon weather systems have frequently affected daily life in the islands, disrupting road transport, shipping schedules and electricity supply in certain areas.

Emergency response agencies and local authorities generally remain on alert during such weather warnings to address incidents related to uprooted trees, water accumulation and temporary disruptions in essential services.

Residents have been advised to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms and to stay indoors during lightning activity wherever possible. People living in vulnerable structures have also been urged to remain cautious during periods of strong winds.

The weather warning also assumes significance for farmers and residents dependent on outdoor activities, as prolonged rain spells may affect transportation and routine work in several parts of the islands.

Tourism-related activities, especially sea-based excursions and beach visits, may also be impacted if adverse weather conditions intensify during the week.

The India Meteorological Department regularly issues weather bulletins for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands owing to the region’s strategic location in the Bay of Bengal, where cyclonic circulations and monsoon systems frequently develop.

Officials said residents should continue monitoring official weather advisories and updates issued by authorities over the next few days as conditions evolve across the islands.
