Sri Vijaya Puram, June 5: Major infrastructure projects planned for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the need to balance development with environmental conservation came into focus on Thursday as BJP National Prabhari Shri Raghunath Kulkarni called on Lieutenant Governor Admiral D.K. Joshi (Retd.) at Raj Niwas.
Kulkarni, accompanied by BJP Andaman and Nicobar State President Shri Anil Tiwari, met the Lieutenant Governor, who also serves as Vice-Chairman of the Islands Development Agency, to discuss several flagship projects being pursued by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration.
According to information released following the meeting, discussions centred on a range of strategic and infrastructure initiatives that are expected to shape the future economic landscape of the islands. Among the projects reviewed were the proposed International Container Transshipment Terminal, International Container Transshipment Port, new Greenfield airports, the Great Nicobar Island township project and the development of a deep-water port.
The projects form part of the Administration’s broader vision to strengthen connectivity, logistics capabilities and economic opportunities in the strategically located island territory. Several of these initiatives are expected to play a significant role in enhancing maritime trade, tourism, infrastructure and national security interests in the Bay of Bengal and the wider Indo-Pacific region.
The meeting took place on the occasion of World Environment Day, adding significance to discussions around sustainable development and ecological protection in one of India’s most environmentally sensitive regions.
In a message issued to mark the day, Lieutenant Governor Admiral D.K. Joshi extended greetings to the people of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship in the face of growing climate challenges.
Referring to this year’s World Environment Day theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”, the Lieutenant Governor said the occasion serves as a reminder that nature remains humanity’s strongest ally in addressing climate change and securing a sustainable future.
He noted that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands possess extraordinary ecological wealth, including dense tropical forests, pristine beaches, coral reefs, mangrove ecosystems and unique biodiversity. These natural resources, he said, not only contribute to environmental health but also support the livelihoods, culture and well-being of island communities.
The Lieutenant Governor emphasized that protecting these fragile ecosystems has become increasingly important amid rising environmental pressures and the impacts of climate change.
He also acknowledged the contributions made by various stakeholders, including government departments, educational institutions, voluntary organizations, youth groups and citizens, towards environmental conservation efforts across the islands.
Over the years, several initiatives such as mangrove plantation drives, beach clean-up campaigns, coral reef conservation programmes, renewable energy adoption and improved waste management practices have gained momentum in the Union Territory.
While appreciating these efforts, the Lieutenant Governor stressed that environmental protection cannot be achieved through government action alone and requires active public participation.
Calling upon islanders, particularly students and young people, to become champions of environmental conservation, he urged citizens to adopt sustainable lifestyles by reducing waste generation, avoiding single-use plastics, conserving water and energy resources, planting trees and preserving sensitive ecosystems.
His message underscored the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding the islands’ natural heritage while pursuing developmental aspirations.
The convergence of discussions on major infrastructure projects and the World Environment Day message reflects one of the key challenges facing the Andaman and Nicobar Islands—ensuring that economic growth and strategic development proceed alongside environmental sustainability.
As several large-scale projects move forward in the coming years, policymakers are expected to continue balancing infrastructure expansion with the protection of the islands’ globally significant ecosystems.
Concluding his World Environment Day message, the Lieutenant Governor called upon all residents to reaffirm their commitment to living in harmony with nature and to work together towards building a greener, cleaner and more sustainable future for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
