Sri Vijaya Puram, November 7: The opening of a public aquarium at Corbyn’s Cove has added a marine biodiversity education facility to Sri Vijaya Puram, with the municipal council introducing entry charges for visitors and setting operating hours from 8 am to 8 pm, excluding a two-hour afternoon break.
The Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council has established the aquarium to provide residents, tourists and other visitors an opportunity to view fish species found in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The facility is also intended to familiarise visitors with the region’s marine biodiversity through an educational and recreational space.

The aquarium will remain open between 8 am and 12 pm and again from 2 pm to 8 pm. The council has fixed an entry fee of Rs. 25 per person for children aged between five and 12 years, while visitors above 12 years will have to pay Rs. 50. Children below five years can enter free of charge.
The council has stated that the admission charges will contribute towards the aquarium’s operational and maintenance expenses. The revenue is intended to support its upkeep and ensure that the facility remains available for public visits.

By opening the facility, the municipal council has introduced a dedicated public space for visitors to explore the fish diversity of the islands. Its stated objective is to increase awareness of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ marine biodiversity while making the facility accessible to both local residents and tourists.
The council has invited residents and visitors to access the aquarium and learn about the fish species native to the island region.
