Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept 01: The Andaman & Nicobar Archives has extended the internship of its first batch of recently graduated History students by another three months, giving them additional hands-on training in preserving, managing and digitising historical and administrative records.
The Short-Term Internship Programme in Archival Management, conducted by the Andaman & Nicobar Archives at the Secretariat, Sri Vijaya Puram, is aimed at providing recently completed B.A. (History) graduates from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands with practical exposure to archival work. The programme carries monthly remuneration.
The initial three-month internship began on June 1, 2026. During the training period, interns worked on a range of archival activities, including preservation and handling of records, basic mending and binding, digitisation, data entry, records management, research and documentation.

The programme also introduced trainees to the functioning of the Archives and the importance of systematically preserving and managing documentary records. It was structured to connect academic knowledge acquired through History studies with practical experience in archival management.
Under the internship policy, the Secretary (Archives) approved a further three-month extension after the first batch demonstrated dedication, commitment and satisfactory performance during the initial period. The extended tenure will allow the interns to gain deeper practical experience across different archival activities.
At the conclusion of the internship, the Andaman & Nicobar Archives, Secretariat, issued Certificates of Internship to the trainees, recognising their satisfactory conduct, performance and participation during the programme.
The initiative focuses on capacity building and archival awareness among students and young graduates of History and related disciplines. Through practical training, participants gain exposure to the preservation, research, management and digital documentation of the documentary heritage of the islands.
The Archives said such programmes are intended to encourage young learners to understand the significance of documentary heritage and develop an interest in archival research, preservation and digital documentation.
The department proposes to continue and strengthen its academic and internship initiatives in the future. The planned continuation is aimed at creating more opportunities for students and researchers to obtain practical exposure to the preservation, management and digitisation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ documentary heritage.
