Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept.01: Twenty police personnel from across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have begun specialised training in seaport immigration procedures as South Andaman District Police seeks to standardise the handling of immigration and foreigners-related duties at ports.
The five-day “Hands-on Training on Seaport Immigration Procedures” began on August 31 and will continue until September 4 at the Conference Hall of the Office of the Superintendent of Police, South Andaman District, Sri Vijaya Puram.
The programme covers personnel from North and Middle Andaman and Nicobar districts, along with members of the Immigration & Foreigners Branch of South Andaman District. Experienced officers from the Bureau of Immigration (BoI), Chennai, are supporting the training.
The programme was inaugurated by Shweta K. Sugathan, IPS, Superintendent of Police and Foreigners Registration Officer, South Andaman District. She said immigration duties required personnel to combine knowledge of prescribed rules with practical understanding, professional competence and coordinated execution in the field.
The training focuses on procedures involving international passengers, foreign crew members and vessels. Participants are receiving practical exposure to seaport immigration operations rather than relying solely on classroom-based theoretical instruction.
The sessions are intended to help personnel identify procedural requirements, conduct immigration formalities and respond to operational situations while maintaining uniformity and compliance with applicable laws.
Bringing personnel from different districts into a common training programme is also intended to improve coordination and consistency in immigration procedures across the Islands. The programme aims to create a trained pool of personnel capable of handling immigration-related responsibilities at seaports in different parts of the Union Territory.
The initiative covers both operational knowledge and practical application, allowing participating personnel to understand procedures and subsequently apply them while performing their assigned duties.
South Andaman District Police said the training forms part of its efforts to strengthen professional skills and preparedness among personnel assigned immigration and foreigners-related responsibilities. The programme is also intended to improve coordination between districts and ensure more consistent handling of immigration duties at seaports across the Islands.
