Sri Vijaya Puram, November 4: India’s leading badminton star P.V. Sindhu has qualified for the 2026 BWF World Tour Finals, marking her return to the prestigious season-ending tournament for the first time since 2021. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed her qualification on Wednesday following an impressive run of performances this season.
The tournament will be held in Hangzhou, China, from December 9 to 13, bringing together the leading eight players or pairs in each discipline based on their performances during the season.
Sindhu will face a formidable field that includes familiar rivals An Se Young of South Korea, Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi and China’s Wang Zhi Yi and Chen Yu Fei.
This will be the Indian shuttler’s sixth career appearance at the World Tour Finals. Although she qualified for the 2022 edition, an injury forced her to withdraw, making her last appearance in the competition in 2021.
Hylo Open Boost
Sindhu’s qualification has been significantly strengthened by her recent triumph at the Hylo Open, where she secured the women’s singles title and earned 9,200 ranking points.
The Super 500 victory helped her climb two places to sixth in the latest BWF World Rankings, strengthening her position among the leading players heading into the season-ending championship.
The Hylo Open crown was her second BWF World Tour title this year, following her victory at the Japan Open Super 750 in July. The Japan Open win was particularly significant as it marked her first individual title since December 2024.
With seven BWF World Tour titles now to her name, Sindhu has enjoyed her most successful season in terms of multiple tour victories since 2022.
She had also reached the final of the French Open earlier in the season but finished runner-up after losing to world No. 1 An Se Young, the reigning Olympic and world champion.
Historic Record
Sindhu remains the only Indian women’s singles player to have won the BWF World Tour Finals title.
She achieved the milestone in 2018, defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the final to become the first Indian to claim the prestigious season-ending crown in the discipline.
Her qualification this year offers another opportunity to challenge the world’s best and add to her achievements on the international badminton circuit.
Focus On Finals
Following her Hylo Open victory, Sindhu opted to skip the Korea Open and Japan Masters, choosing to prioritise recovery, fitness and preparation for the World Tour Finals.
The decision reflects her focus on arriving in Hangzhou in the best possible condition for the tournament, where she will be competing against the strongest performers of the season.
With two titles already secured in 2026 and a return to the world’s top six, Sindhu will enter the season-ending championship with renewed confidence and the opportunity to reclaim a title she last won eight years ago.
