Sri Vijaya Puram, July 22: In an effort to strengthen public awareness against alcohol and drug abuse, the South Andaman District Administration will organise a five-day badminton tournament from Aug. 1 to 5 at the Multipurpose Hall, Netaji Stadium, Sri Vijaya Puram. The championship forms part of the district’s ongoing awareness campaign aimed at encouraging people, particularly the youth, to reject substance abuse and embrace sports as a healthy and disciplined way of life.
The tournament is being organised by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman District, in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Andaman & Nicobar Administration. The initiative combines sports with public awareness, using competitive badminton as a platform to promote the message against alcohol and drug abuse.
According to the organisers, the championship seeks to reinforce the importance of healthy recreational activities while encouraging participants to adopt sports as a positive and productive lifestyle. The campaign focuses on creating awareness about the harmful effects of alcohol and drug abuse and motivating people to remain engaged in constructive pursuits.
The competition will be conducted across three categories to ensure wider participation. The Open Category for men and women will feature singles and doubles events. Separate singles and doubles competitions will also be organised for men and women above 45 years of age. In addition, boys and girls under the age of 18 will compete in singles and doubles events.
The District Administration has invited interested badminton players to register for the championship. Participation has also been opened to students, Government employees, defence personnel and members of the general public, with the objective of encouraging broad community involvement in the awareness campaign.
