Sri Vijaya Puram, July 22: A total of 114 Children with Special Needs (CwSN) from government and private schools across South Andaman underwent comprehensive assessments during a special camp organised under Samagra Shiksha, in an initiative aimed at improving access to appropriate assistive support and strengthening inclusive education in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The assessment camp was organised by the Block Project Office (BPO), South Andaman, under Samagra Shiksha at Government Senior Secondary School (Girls), Sri Vijaya Puram. The programme brought together students from schools across South Andaman for medical and functional assessments required to identify their individual support needs.
Assessments were conducted by a team from the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) in collaboration with Dr. Tamanna Sengupta, Chief Medical Officer (NFSG), and the medical team from GB Pant Hospital.
The exercise focused on evaluating Children with Special Needs to facilitate timely intervention and improve access to suitable assistive devices that can support their education and daily functioning.
The programme was inaugurated by Archana Singh, Principal of Government Senior Secondary School (Girls), who urged parents to actively support their children throughout the assessment process and participate in initiatives aimed at improving their educational outcomes.
Officials said the assessment camp forms part of the ongoing efforts under Samagra Shiksha to strengthen inclusive education by identifying the specific requirements of children and facilitating appropriate educational support.
The programme was coordinated by Lydiya Michael, PSRT, and Jai Singh, Special Educator, under the guidance of the Block Project Office, South Andaman.
The camp was conducted with the support of Special Educators Santosh Mondal and Mousmi Biswas, Sign Language Interpreter Priyanka Kumari, staff of Government Senior Secondary School (Girls), the ALIMCO assessment team, the medical team from GB Pant Hospital and parents who accompanied the participating students.
According to the organisers, timely assessment plays an important role in ensuring that Children with Special Needs receive the necessary assistive devices and educational support required for effective participation in classroom learning.
The initiative is intended to improve access to inclusive education by enabling children to participate more effectively in school while supporting their independence and confidence through need-based interventions.
Officials stated that the assessment camp reflects the continued implementation of inclusive education measures under Samagra Shiksha in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with emphasis on early identification of requirements and improved educational access for Children with Special Needs.
The programme concluded after completing assessments of all participating students, with the findings expected to support further assistance under the inclusive education component of Samagra Shiksha.
