Sri Vijaya Puram, Sep 17: Ozone layer depletion and the need for collective environmental action came into focus at Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM), Sri Vijaya Puram, where an awareness programme marked World Ozone Day.
The programme sought to sensitise students to the importance of the ozone layer, the causes and impacts of its depletion, and the role of responsible environmental practices in protecting the environment. Faculty members and students from the Departments of Geography, Botany and Zoology took part in the programme.
Dr. K. Silambarasan, Scientist-B, Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), A&N Regional Centre, delivered an expert lecture on the significance of the ozone layer. His session covered the causes and impacts of ozone depletion and the need for collective action to address environmental concerns.
The Montreal Protocol and the continuing importance of environmental responsibility also featured in the programme. Dr. Romila, Programme Officer, Environment Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP), ZSI, A&N Regional Centre, spoke on ozone layer depletion and the Montreal Protocol.
Dr. Romila also highlighted the 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse and Recycle—as practices relevant to environmental protection. The session linked awareness about ozone depletion with everyday approaches to responsible environmental management.
Dr. Pearl Devdas, Principal, JNRM, emphasised the importance of building environmental awareness among students and encouraged them to follow sustainable and responsible practices.
The programme brought together academic participation from Geography, Botany and Zoology with expert inputs from the ZSI, covering both the scientific aspects of ozone depletion and broader environmental responsibility.
The World Ozone Day programme therefore focused on familiarising students with the importance of the ozone layer, the effects of its depletion, the Montreal Protocol and practical environmental practices through the 3Rs.
