Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 9: Students in Mayabunder were encouraged to recognise emotional distress and seek timely professional support during an awareness session organised on World Suicide Prevention Day at the Conference Hall of MGCC.
The session focused on suicide prevention, mental health, emotional well-being and the importance of reaching out for support when facing emotional difficulties. It sought to build awareness among students and create space for discussions around mental health and self-awareness.
Psychiatrist Dr Aathira J. Prakash interacted with the students during the programme and led activities designed to encourage self-awareness and open conversations about emotional well-being. The activities formed part of the effort to engage students directly on issues that can otherwise remain difficult to discuss.

Clinical Psychologist Prerna and Psychiatric Social Worker Surajit Roy also served as resource persons at the session. They addressed different aspects of mental health and emotional challenges, with particular emphasis on recognising signs of distress at an early stage.
The resource persons highlighted the importance of identifying emotional difficulties in time and seeking professional assistance and support rather than allowing distress to remain unaddressed.
The programme placed student awareness at the centre of the observance, linking suicide prevention with broader conversations around emotional health and access to support. Through interaction and activities, the session sought to encourage students to become more aware of their own emotional well-being and more open to discussing concerns.
The participation of a psychiatrist, clinical psychologist and psychiatric social worker brought multiple professional perspectives to the session, covering mental health, emotional challenges, early recognition of distress and the need for professional help.
The awareness programme was organised as part of the observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, with the session using student engagement and professional interaction to address suicide prevention and mental health awareness.
