Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 03: Police recovered around 200 litres of illicit lehan, suspected to be intended for illegal liquor production, during a search operation in the dense forest area of Govindapur today, tightening surveillance against unauthorised liquor-making in North and Middle Andaman.
The operation was carried out by the team of OP Badamnallah under Police Station Billiground after receiving reliable information about suspected illegal activity in the area. Acting on the input, the police team moved into the forest and conducted a search.
During the operation, personnel found an iron drum containing approximately 200 litres of lehan. Police suspected the fermented material was being used as a raw material for the unlawful manufacture of liquor.
Following due procedure, the recovered lehan was destroyed at the spot, preventing its further use for illegal liquor production.
The action forms part of continued patrolling and surveillance by North and Middle Andaman Police to detect and curb unauthorised liquor manufacturing and other illegal activities. The operation also underscores the role of timely information in enabling police teams to act against suspected unlawful activity in forested areas.
Police have appealed to residents to report credible information concerning crime or other illegal activities to the nearest police station. Information can also be shared through the emergency numbers 100 and 112.
The police said the identity of informers would be kept confidential and that suitable rewards would be provided for credible information. The appeal comes as authorities continue to rely on public inputs alongside field-level surveillance to identify and prevent illegal activities.
The recovery of the illicit lehan during the forest search highlights the continued police focus on areas where unlawful liquor production may take place away from populated locations. Authorities have reiterated that information from the public can assist law-enforcement teams in responding to such activities.
