Drug Abuse Prevention Drive Held in Swaraj, Shaheed Dweep With Focus on Early Intervention

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 01: An awareness programme on drug abuse prevention and demand reduction was held across Panchayat areas in Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep, bringing local representatives, frontline workers and residents into discussions on prevention, early intervention, treatment and the legal consequences of drug-related activities.

The programme was organised under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) in collaboration with the Andaman and Nicobar Police and the Directorate of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies. Govind Nagar and Shyamnagar Gram Panchayats in Swaraj Dweep and Neil Kendra Gram Panchayat in Shaheed Dweep participated in the initiative.

The programme began with an awareness rally organised by Govind Nagar Gram Panchayat. Panchayat members, staff and members of the public took part in the rally, which carried messages calling for collective action against substance abuse and for healthier communities.

An interactive awareness session followed the rally, focusing on the harmful effects associated with drug abuse and the importance of preventing substance use, identifying concerns early and ensuring access to treatment, counselling and rehabilitation.

A resource person from the Directorate of Social Welfare, speaking under NAPDDR, explained the objectives of drug demand reduction measures and outlined available avenues for treatment, counselling and rehabilitation. The session also highlighted the role of timely intervention in addressing substance-abuse concerns.

The Panchayat Secretary and Pradhan of Govind Nagar Gram Panchayat underlined the role of Panchayati Raj Institutions and local communities in identifying concerns, supporting affected individuals and helping create an environment free from drug abuse.

Police representatives from Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep Police Stations briefed participants on the legal consequences associated with involvement in drug-related activities. They also urged the community, particularly young people, to avoid drugs and make responsible choices.

The programme brought together government departments, local institutions and community participants around drug demand reduction, with speakers stressing that addressing substance abuse requires coordinated involvement rather than responsibility resting with a single department or agency.

The programme concluded with the NMBA (Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan) Pledge. Participants collectively reaffirmed their commitment to contributing towards a drug-free society.
