Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 01: The Directorate of Social Welfare has expanded the reach of the Unique Disability ID (UDID) Scheme to rural island communities by conducting awareness, registration and renewal programmes in Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep, aiming to improve access to disability certification and related government services for eligible beneficiaries.
The programmes were organised on August 27 and 28 at Govind Nagar and Shyamnagar Gram Panchayats in Swaraj Dweep and Neil Kendra Gram Panchayat in Shaheed Dweep as part of the department’s continuing efforts to strengthen UDID coverage in remote areas.
The sessions brought together Panchayat representatives, doctors, Anganwadi workers, Safai Mitras, Panchayat staff, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), caregivers and members of the public.
During the programmes, the State Coordinator (UDID), Directorate of Social Welfare, explained the objectives and benefits of the UDID Scheme and provided information on disability certification, registration, renewal procedures and the online application process.
Participants were also briefed on the medical assessment process and the role of the Medical Board in issuing UDID certification, enabling prospective applicants and existing beneficiaries to understand the requirements involved.
Following the awareness sessions, officials facilitated on-the-spot registration and renewal for eligible Persons with Disabilities. The exercise covered both first-time applicants and beneficiaries seeking renewal of their UDID cards.
Officials also guided applicants through the documentation and application procedures and informed them about the subsequent medical assessments required for certification under the scheme.
According to the Directorate, the outreach initiative is intended to improve the accessibility and timely delivery of UDID-related services, particularly for Persons with Disabilities living in areas where access to departmental offices and related facilities is comparatively limited.
The department said such awareness and facilitation programmes are aimed at ensuring that eligible beneficiaries can obtain or renew their UDID cards, enabling them to access various government schemes, benefits and services linked to the disability identification system.
