Airport Drug Bust: 1.285 Kg Ganja Recovered From Passenger Arriving From Kolkata

Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 22:  A passenger arriving from Kolkata was arrested after Anti-Narcotics Police allegedly recovered 1.285 kg of ganja from his luggage at the old airport terminal near the exit gate of Veer Savarkar International Airport on August 21.

The operation followed specific intelligence inputs received by the Anti-Narcotics Police Station. A dedicated team led by Inspector K. Binoj, Station House Officer of the Anti-Narcotics Police Station, carried out the interception and seizure.

Police identified the arrested person as Mijanur Sardar, 25, a private labourer and permanent resident of Pangaskhali in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. He was reportedly residing in a rented house at Wimberlygunj.

According to the police, Sardar had arrived in Sri Vijaya Puram from Kolkata on August 21 on an Air India Express flight. During a check of his luggage at the old airport terminal, officers allegedly found 1.285 kg of ganja concealed inside his bag.

Police seized the suspected contraband and arrested Sardar at the spot after completing the prescribed formalities under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

The operation was carried out by a team comprising Assistant Sub-Inspector Sanjay Yadav Rao, Head Constable (SG) Tamil Selvam, Police Constables Raja Rao and Anup Das, and Lady Police Constable Tamil Selvi.

The investigation is continuing, with police examining the case to trace the alleged supply chain and identify other persons who may have been involved.

The raid was conducted under the supervision of Deependra Kumar Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Narcotics), and overall supervision of Avnish Kumar, Superintendent of Police (CID), Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The seizure adds to the narcotics cases being investigated by the Anti-Narcotics Police Station in the Islands. In this case, the investigation is focused not only on the seized substance but also on establishing its alleged source and intended network, according to the police.

The suspected ganja was recovered after the passenger arrived from Kolkata, while the police action took place at the old airport terminal near the exit gate of Veer Savarkar International Airport.

The police have appealed to members of the public to report suspected activities involving drug trafficking or substance abuse. Information can be provided through emergency number 112 or police contact numbers 234216, 9434280055 and 9531856080.

Further investigation and legal proceedings in the case are underway.
