Virginia Targets Indian Tourists to Boost Travel and Spending

Date:

New Delhi, June 9: The US state of Virginia is intensifying its efforts to attract Indian tourists, following the emergence of India as its largest overseas tourism source market and the second-largest international visitor market overall.

Tourism officials are now focusing on encouraging Indian travellers to spend more time in the state and explore destinations beyond the popular day-trip circuit, with a particular emphasis on increasing overnight stays and visitor spending.

According to preliminary tourism estimates, Virginia welcomed more than 65,000 visitors from India in 2025, generating approximately $112 million in tourism spending. The figures follow a strong performance in 2024, when the state recorded over 69,000 Indian arrivals who contributed an estimated $124 million to the local economy.

Officials from the Virginia Tourism Corporation said India has become a strategically important market for the state’s tourism sector, prompting increased engagement with Indian travel companies, tour operators and travel advisors.

During a recent interaction with Indian travel industry stakeholders, Heidi Johannesen, Managing Director for Global Markets at the tourism corporation, said the slight decline in visitor numbers between 2024 and 2025 was linked to broader geopolitical developments and visa-related challenges rather than reduced interest in the destination.

Despite the marginal dip, Virginia continues to see significant tourism potential from India, particularly as Indian outbound travel grows rapidly and travellers seek longer and more diverse international experiences.

Tourism officials noted that a large number of Indian visitors currently include Virginia as part of broader East Coast itineraries. However, many restrict their visit to the famous Luray Caverns, often travelling there from the Washington, D.C. area and returning the same day without staying overnight.

As a result, the tourism corporation is attempting to broaden awareness of Virginia’s wider attractions and encourage travellers to spend additional days within the state.

Among the destinations being promoted are Mount Vernon, the historic home of America’s first president; Monticello; Virginia Beach; Colonial Williamsburg; and Fairfax County.

According to tourism officials, these destinations remain relatively underexplored by Indian travellers despite offering a combination of history, culture, recreation and family-friendly attractions.

Virginia’s tourism portfolio extends beyond historical sites. Officials highlighted the state’s mountain landscapes, beaches, vineyards, culinary experiences, outdoor recreation opportunities and theme parks as key attractions that could appeal to a wide range of Indian visitors.

The state is also seeking to position itself as a destination for experiential travel, combining heritage tourism with nature, gastronomy and leisure activities.

To strengthen its presence in the Indian market, the tourism corporation has been conducting cooperative marketing campaigns, social media outreach programmes, media engagements and direct partnerships with travel trade stakeholders.

Industry experts believe such initiatives are becoming increasingly important as competition among international destinations for Indian tourists intensifies. With India emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing outbound travel markets, destinations across North America, Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East are actively targeting Indian visitors.

Virginia is also hoping to benefit from the ongoing nationwide celebrations marking 250 years of American independence. Tourism officials believe the milestone provides a unique opportunity to showcase the state’s historic role in the formation of the United States.

Major commemorative events are planned at Colonial Williamsburg and other heritage sites, including historical reenactments, cultural programmes and fireworks displays. Officials say these celebrations could serve as a major draw for international tourists interested in American history.

For Virginia, attracting more Indian visitors is not only about increasing tourist arrivals but also about encouraging longer stays and higher spending. By expanding awareness of its attractions beyond a single-day excursion, the state hopes to capture a larger share of the growing Indian outbound tourism market in the years ahead.
