Sri Vijaya Puram, July 30: A targeted anti-narcotics operation by Aberdeen Police led to the arrest of two alleged drug peddlers and the seizure of suspected methamphetamine, ganja and a vehicle in South Andaman on July 29 night, marking another enforcement action against the illegal drug trade in the islands. Police said the operation was launched following specific intelligence about an alleged narcotics transaction in Junglighat, and further investigation is underway to trace the source and intended distribution network of the seized substances.
According to police, Inspector Vijay Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of Aberdeen Police Station, received information at around 7.15 pm on July 29 that two individuals were waiting near the waiting shed at the Graveyard in Prem Nagar, Junglighat, to sell a large quantity of methamphetamine.
Acting on the input, a police team reached the location and intercepted the suspects. The accused were identified as Chand Veer alias Rahul, 31, a resident of Junglighat, and M. Karmegam, 22, a resident of Brookshabad.
During the search, police recovered approximately 11.08 grams of suspected methamphetamine from Chand Veer and about 2.17 grams of the suspected narcotic substance from M. Karmegam.
Police said that during sustained questioning, Chand Veer disclosed that he had concealed a quantity of ganja inside his Maruti Swift VXI bearing registration number AN01F5082, which was parked nearby.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the recovery of approximately 508 grams of ganja concealed inside an Adidas backpack. Police also seized the car along with its key as part of the operation.
Following the recovery of the suspected narcotic substances, both accused were taken into custody and were formally arrested at 11.50 pm, police said.
Investigators are continuing to examine the case to ascertain the source of the seized narcotic substances and determine the intended distribution network. Police have not disclosed any further details regarding the investigation, which remains in progress.
The latest seizure forms part of continuing enforcement efforts against the trafficking and distribution of narcotic substances in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with investigators focusing on uncovering the supply chain linked to the recovered contraband.
