Trump Proclaims US 250th Independence Anniversary, Calls for Nationwide Commemoration

Date:

Washington, July 4: President Donald Trump has officially proclaimed July 4, 2026, as the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the United States Declaration of Independence, calling on Americans to commemorate the historic milestone through ceremonies recognising the nation’s founding ideals, history and achievements.

The proclamation, issued on the eve of Independence Day, describes the Declaration of Independence as the enduring foundation of American freedom and states that the principles adopted in 1776 continue to shape the country after 250 years.

In the proclamation, Trump urged citizens across the United States to observe the anniversary with appropriate ceremonies honouring the nation’s heritage, history and accomplishments. He said the country continues to uphold the spirit established by its founders and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the nation in the years ahead.

The proclamation traces the origins of American independence to July 1776, when the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. It notes that the document was principally drafted by Thomas Jefferson following a resolution introduced by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia calling for independence from British rule.

The proclamation also reiterates the Declaration’s assertion that all people are created equal and possess inherent rights, including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Reviewing the nation’s formative years, Trump highlighted several defining events of the American Revolution, including the Battles of Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, the crossing of the Delaware River, the winter at Valley Forge and the victory at Yorktown. According to the proclamation, these events secured American independence and helped shape the country’s national identity.

The document also references later milestones in United States history, including the preservation of the Union during the Civil War, the abolition of slavery, industrial development, victories in the First and Second World Wars, the Moon landing and technological advances in communications, computing, science and medicine.

Looking ahead, Trump outlined priorities that include protecting national sovereignty, preserving the country’s heritage and expanding American leadership in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum research, energy development and space exploration. The proclamation also reiterates ambitions to return Americans to the Moon and pursue future missions to Mars.

The proclamation formally designates July 4, 2026, as the “250th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Declaration of Independence” and encourages citizens to observe the occasion through public ceremonies across the country.

The anniversary forms part of the broader America250 programme, a congressionally established national initiative commemorating 250 years since the founding of the United States. Federal agencies, state governments, local communities and cultural institutions have scheduled commemorative events, exhibitions and educational programmes throughout the anniversary year.
