Sri Vijaya Puram, July 4: The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has introduced a QR code-based cashless fare collection system in Administration-operated STS bus services at the Bus Terminus in Sri Vijaya Puram, marking the first phase of a digital payment initiative aimed at modernising public transport and improving passenger convenience.
The Transport Department has implemented the digital payment system to enable commuters to pay bus fares through any UPI-enabled mobile application by scanning QR codes carried by bus conductors. The initiative is intended to provide passengers with a faster, safer and cashless payment option while reducing dependence on physical cash transactions.
The first phase of implementation covers Administration-operated STS bus services under the Bus Terminus, Sri Vijaya Puram. Officials said the initiative forms part of the Administration’s broader effort to promote digital governance and improve efficiency in the delivery of public transport services.
Under the new system, passengers can complete fare payments instantly using any compatible UPI application on their mobile phones. The QR code-based mechanism is designed to eliminate the need for commuters to carry exact change while reducing transaction time during boarding.
According to the Transport Department, the digital fare collection system is expected to improve transparency in fare collection by minimising cash handling and promoting secure electronic transactions. The move also seeks to streamline operational processes within the public transport network by introducing a standardised digital payment method.
Officials stated that the initiative is expected to benefit a wide range of commuters, including daily passengers, students and tourists, by providing a convenient payment alternative that supports faster ticketing and a smoother travel experience.
The Administration has appealed to commuters to actively use the QR code-based payment facility and participate in the transition towards cashless public transport. Passengers have been advised to keep their preferred UPI applications ready while travelling to enable seamless fare payments through the newly introduced system.
The Transport Department stated that the initiative aligns with its continued efforts to adopt technology-driven, citizen-focused measures aimed at improving public transport services while supporting greater transparency, operational efficiency and ease of doing business in the Union Territory.
The QR code-based fare collection system marks the beginning of the Administration’s phased implementation of digital payment solutions in STS bus services as part of ongoing efforts to modernise public transport infrastructure and enhance commuter experience.
