Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 30: Sri Vijaya Puram will host a World War-II-themed heritage walk on October 3, taking participants through historic sites linked to the city’s past as the Department of Art & Culture begins organising regular walks to deepen public engagement with the Islands’ historical and cultural heritage.
The walk will run from 5.30 am to 7 am and will be led by local historian Dr. Pronob Kumar Sircar. The route will begin at Cellular Jail and cover the Battle of Aberdeen Memorial, a bunker, Andaman Club, Farzand Ali Market, Netaji Club, Zulfikar Ali’s Memorial, Clock Tower and the bunker at Gandhi Park before concluding at the Shinto shrine in Gandhi Park.
The Department said the regular heritage walks will seek to present the Islands’ historical and cultural legacy through direct engagement with heritage sites. The programme is intended for tourists, residents, students and others interested in exploring the heritage of the Islands.
Participants will get an opportunity to learn about the history, architecture and stories associated with sites along the route. The initiative will also provide local guides and tourism students with an opportunity to learn from these experiences and carry forward knowledge of the Islands’ cultural heritage.
The October 3 walk is open to tourists, students, freelance tourist guides, empanelled guides, representatives of tour operators and other individuals interested in exploring the Islands’ heritage.
