ISRO Expert Leads Space Communication Workshop for Students at Andaman Science Centre

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, April 21: A three-day workshop focusing on the practical aspects of space communication has commenced at the Science Centre in Sri Vijaya Puram, bringing together students and educators for hands-on exposure to satellite-based technologies.

The programme, titled “Practical Perspective of Space Communication,” is being conducted in collaboration with Decibel, an academy for applied space communication based in Bengaluru, and will continue until April 22, 2026. Around 60 selected students, along with teachers from schools and higher educational institutions in and around Sri Vijaya Puram, are participating.

The workshop was inaugurated by Rajanish Kumar Singh, Secretary, Science and Technology, who attended as the chief guest. Addressing the participants, he underlined the importance of practical learning in emerging scientific fields and noted that such initiatives can strengthen student engagement with advanced technologies.

The sessions are being led by B. A. Subramani, a space simulation engineer from the U R Rao Satellite Centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Bengaluru. Participants are being introduced to real-time tracking of satellites and space objects, along with techniques for predicting satellite passes.

The workshop also includes demonstrations on ham radio operations and exercises on receiving and decoding live weather images transmitted by satellites. These activities are designed to provide direct exposure to the functioning of space communication systems and their real-world applications.

Naresh Chafekar, National Coordinator of Vigyan Bharati, also addressed the participants during the inaugural session. The event also marked the release of the brochure for Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan 2026–27.

Earlier, Debasish Paul, Education Officer at the Science Centre, welcomed the participants and outlined the objectives and structure of the workshop. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Manu Vashishtha, Curator of the Science Centre, who encouraged students to actively engage in scientific learning.

The workshop represents an effort to introduce students in the islands to advanced domains such as space communication through direct interaction and practical training modules.
