Sri Vijaya Puram, June 22: Illegal possession of liquor remains under scrutiny in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a police raid in Rangat led to the seizure of 66 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and the registration of an excise case against a local resident who allegedly failed to produce any valid permit or licence for possession of the stock.
The operation was carried out on June 20 by a team from Police Station Rangat led by Station House Officer Mohd. Sameer under the supervision of SDPO Rangat Chandan G.S. The raid formed part of ongoing enforcement measures aimed at checking violations of excise regulations and illegal liquor possession in the region.
During the operation, police recovered 66 bottles of IMFL of different brands and quantities from the possession of Bijendra Kumar Yadav, 37, an auto driver residing at Ward No. 5, Golden Street, Rangat. The seized stock included whisky and rum bottles in 750 ml, 375 ml and 180 ml capacities.
According to information provided by the police, the liquor was recovered during the raid and the individual concerned was questioned regarding its possession. Authorities stated that he was unable to furnish any valid permit or licence authorising possession of the liquor, resulting in an alleged violation of the applicable excise provisions.
The entire stock was seized and taken into custody. Subsequently, a case was registered against the accused at Police Station Rangat under the relevant provisions of the Excise Regulation.
Police said that a preliminary inquiry conducted after the seizure indicated that the accused had previously been involved in an excise-related case registered at the same police station.
The latest seizure comes amid continuing enforcement efforts against illegal liquor activities across the islands. Authorities have been conducting checks and raids to identify violations of excise laws and regulate the unauthorised possession and distribution of liquor.
Officials have also appealed to residents to share credible information regarding criminal activities or violations of law with the nearest police station. Information can also be communicated through emergency helpline numbers 100 and 112, or through the district police contact number 03192-273344.
Authorities stated that the identity of informants would be kept confidential and that suitable rewards may be provided for actionable information contributing to law enforcement efforts.
The case remains under investigation.
