Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 24: A pregnant cow was found with its tail severed at a plantation in Govind Nagar, Swaraj Dweep, on September 23, prompting its owner to file a police complaint and seek action against those responsible. The circumstances surrounding the injury and the identity of the person or persons who caused it have not been established and remain under police investigation.
The cow belongs to Subal Roy, 43, a resident of Govind Nagar No. 03, who is engaged in farming and animal husbandry. Roy said he had taken the cow from his residence to his areca nut plantation, about one kilometre away, and tied it there on the morning of the incident.
According to Roy, he returned to the plantation at around 11 am and moved the cow to another location within the plantation. At that point, he said, the animal appeared normal and showed no visible injury.
Around 1 pm, Roy returned to the plantation to cut Napier grass for his cattle. As he approached the area, he noticed the cow running in an agitated state. On reaching it, he found that its tail had been cut off.
Roy immediately brought the injured animal back to his cattle shed and informed the police and a veterinary doctor. The veterinarian attended to the cow and administered primary treatment. As rain and muddy conditions raised concerns about the wound and stitches getting wet, Roy took the animal to a hospital or medical facility between 6.30 pm and 7 pm for further treatment and dressing.
Following the treatment, he arranged for the cow to recover in a room next to his residence after clearing the space of household belongings. At the time of the conversation about the incident, Roy said he was with the animal in a grassy area about 200 metres from the hospital after its dressing had been completed.
Roy said the cow is pregnant and expected to give birth next month. He currently owns three cows, which he brought from Neil Island, and said he had previously owned seven. He has been rearing cattle since around 2022–23.
Roy said the injury has made it difficult for the cow to drive away flies and mosquitoes. Expressing concern over the incident, he said that if anyone had a personal dispute with him, they should have confronted him rather than allegedly targeting the animal.
Roy has lodged a complaint/FIR at the police station and urged the police and administration to conduct a thorough investigation, identify those responsible and take appropriate legal action. He also sought measures to prevent similar incidents of animal cruelty and protect other animals.
The exact circumstances of the injury remain unestablished, and no person has been identified as responsible so far.
