Sri Vijaya Puram, June 27: The Open Beach Volleyball Knockout Tournament commenced at Corbyn’s Cove Beach on Friday, bringing together 35 teams from across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as part of the Monsoon Carnival-2026, an initiative aimed at promoting the Islands as a year-round tourism destination through sports, adventure and cultural activities.
The Beach Sports Fest #VictoryVibes is being organised by the Department of Tourism, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs and other stakeholders. The event forms part of the Monsoon Carnival-2026, which seeks to showcase the Islands’ potential for beach tourism, eco-tourism, adventure sports and cultural experiences beyond the peak tourist season.
The opening day witnessed enthusiastic participation from Islanders, tourists and sports enthusiasts, with Corbyn’s Cove Beach providing the venue for a series of competitive matches in both the men’s and women’s categories. Pleasant weather and the beachside setting attracted a large number of spectators, who turned out to witness the tournament.
A total of 35 teams are participating in the competition, comprising 22 men’s teams and 13 women’s teams. Altogether, 28 matches were played on the opening day across both categories.
The tournament is being conducted with technical support from the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, ensuring the smooth conduct of the competition.
Throughout the day, spectators lined the beach to cheer participating teams as players displayed their sporting abilities, teamwork and competitive spirit in closely contested matches.
According to the Tourism Department, the Beach Sports Fest is one of the key attractions of the Monsoon Carnival-2026 and has been designed to encourage greater participation in outdoor sporting activities while strengthening the Islands’ image as a destination that offers tourism experiences throughout the year.
The Monsoon Carnival also aims to integrate sports with tourism promotion by highlighting the Islands’ natural coastline, adventure opportunities and cultural vibrancy. The initiative seeks to attract visitors while encouraging local community participation through a series of sporting and cultural events.
The Department of Tourism has invited residents, tourists and families to participate in the ongoing Monsoon Carnival celebrations and experience the sporting activities and natural surroundings at Corbyn’s Cove Beach during the monsoon season.
The tournament will continue on its second day from 9.30 am, with the semi-final and final matches in both the men’s and women’s categories scheduled to begin at 3 pm on June 27. The Department has appealed to the public to visit Corbyn’s Cove Beach and witness the concluding matches of the Open Beach Volleyball Knockout Tournament under the Monsoon Tourism Festival.
