Following the West Bengal Assembly election results, residents of Bhabanipur in Kolkata expressed optimism and relief, hoping for improved governance and opportunities. Idol-makers highlighted challenges like disrupted raw material supply, lack of storage, and limited financial support. Women emphasized safety concerns, while others saw the result as a chance for development. The community now looks to the new government for tangible reforms in livelihoods, infrastructure, and fairness.

Kolkata, May 5: A day after the West Bengal Assembly election results, residents of Bhabanipur in Kolkata expressed a mix of relief, optimism, and cautious expectation, as many welcomed the change in political leadership and voiced hopes for improved governance and livelihoods.

The mood in the locality, known for its traditional idol-making community, reflected a sense of transition. Several residents described the electoral outcome as a “new beginning,” believing it could bring relief from long standing challenges and open up opportunities for fairer access to resources and employment.

Members of the murtikar (idol maker) community, a vital cultural and economic group in the area, highlighted the hardships they have endured in recent years. Many pointed to disruptions in the supply of essential raw materials such as clay, along with a lack of institutional support that has affected their ability to sustain their craft.

“We have faced a lot of problems. Even the supply of mud was stopped at times. Opportunities often depended on following certain conditions,” said a local artisan, expressing hope that the new administration would ensure equal treatment and remove such barriers.

Residents across Bhabanipur echoed similar sentiments, viewing the election results as a turning point for the state. Some described the mandate as a reflection of public desire for change and accountability. “This is a historic day for Bengal. People have shown their trust in a new direction, and we hope this will bring an end to past issues,” said another resident.

Women in the locality also shared expectations of enhanced safety and empowerment. Several voiced optimism that the change in governance would create a more secure and supportive environment. “We believe there will be more safety and less pressure now. It feels like a positive shift, especially for women,” a resident said.

Beyond immediate reactions, some locals stressed the importance of political change as a driver of development. “Governments should change periodically to ensure progress. With this shift, we hope development activities will increase and benefit everyone,” another resident remarked, underlining a broader aspiration for growth and stability.

However, for the idol-makers of Bhabanipur, daily survival remains a pressing concern. Many artisans, whose families have practiced the craft for generations creating idols of deities like Durga, Kali, and Ganesh – spoke about infrastructural and financial constraints. Limited workspace, lack of storage facilities, and difficulty accessing loans have forced many to display and store their idols on footpaths.

“We don’t have proper godowns or financial support. Because of this, we are often forced to keep idols on the roadside, which affects both our work and income,” an artisan explained.

Despite these challenges, the community expressed hope that the new government would introduce tangible measures, including easier access to credit, dedicated workspaces, and improved supply chains for raw materials.

As Bhabanipur absorbs the implications of the election outcome, the prevailing sentiment combines optimism with expectation. Residents are looking beyond political change toward concrete improvements in governance, economic support, and social security.

“We are happy with the result, but what matters now is action. We hope idol-makers and common people will get steady work and live without difficulties,” a resident summed up.
