Sri Vijaya Puram, May 5: Concerns over inconsistent age criteria in the ongoing Andaman and Nicobar Police recruitment have prompted Member of Parliament Bishnu Pada Ray to seek an urgent review, citing the need for uniformity and fairness in the selection process.
In a communication addressed to the Director General of Police, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ray raised objections to variations in the prescribed age limits for certain Group ‘C’ posts under the recruitment notification issued on April 24, 2026. While acknowledging the recruitment drive as a positive step toward generating employment opportunities for local youth, he flagged discrepancies that have led to confusion among aspirants.
According to the notification, the general age limit for most Group ‘C’ posts is set between 18-33 years for male candidates and 18-38 years for female candidates. However, for specific categories such as Constables, Fitters, Diesel Mechanics, and Firemen, different age limits of 18-25 or 18-30 years have been prescribed.

Ray pointed out that this variation appears inconsistent with the Andaman and Nicobar Administration’s circular dated August 25, 2025, which mandates uniform upper age limits for Group ‘C’ posts as per existing norms. The circular also directs departments to revise their recruitment rules in case of any deviation.
Highlighting concerns raised by job aspirants, the MP stressed that the lack of uniformity could restrict eligible candidates from participating in the recruitment process. He stated that aligning the age criteria with administrative guidelines would expand opportunities and ensure equitable access to government employment.
The recruitment notification, which covers multiple Group ‘B’ (Non-Gazetted) and Group ‘C’ posts, has been positioned as a significant initiative by the Police Department to address unemployment in the islands. Ray acknowledged the department’s efforts in initiating the process but emphasised the importance of adhering to established policy frameworks.
He has urged the Police Department to examine the issue at the earliest and make necessary amendments to remove discrepancies in the age limits. A copy of his communication has also been sent to the Chief Secretary of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration for further consideration.
The development underscores growing scrutiny over recruitment processes in the islands, particularly in ensuring transparency and consistency in eligibility criteria, as authorities continue to address employment concerns among local youth.
