Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 7: The debate over student participation in democratic processes intensified today after NDA leaders endorsed RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s recent interaction with Gen Z and Gen Alpha students, describing his observations on youth aspirations and democratic engagement as timely and relevant. Opposition leaders, however, questioned whether governments would act in line with the principles he outlined.
Reacting to Bhagwat’s interaction, Bihar Minister Ram Kripal Yadav said the RSS chief had made a meaningful effort to understand the concerns, thoughts and aspirations of young people. He said Bhagwat’s remarks were appropriate and offered an example that others could follow.
Telangana BJP president N. Ramchandra Rao also welcomed the interaction, describing it as beneficial for students, youth and society. He said Bhagwat’s message to the nation was both interesting and relevant in the present context.
According to Rao, Bhagwat addressed several issues during the interaction, including student protests. He said the RSS chief recognised protests as a democratic right while cautioning that they should not be misused for purposes beyond their intended objective.
Speaking in Mumbai on Thursday, Bhagwat said young people associated with Gen Z movements should be regarded as part of society and should not be labelled “anti-national.” He said their concerns were genuine and stressed that democratic systems must provide space for dialogue and discussion.
Bhagwat also said today’s youth expect logical explanations and meaningful engagement instead of unquestioning acceptance. He added that protests can serve as an important democratic means of expressing concerns, provided they remain centred on constructive dialogue.
His remarks, however, drew criticism from opposition leaders. Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad said the advice should also be followed by governments, asserting that protests are an essential feature of democracy.
Prasad referred to previous student demonstrations and alleged that students raising legitimate demands had faced police action, including lathi-charge and the use of tear gas. He also expressed concern over the challenges faced by students and young people across the country.
The comments have triggered political reactions across party lines, with the discussion centring on youth engagement, democratic rights and the treatment of student protests.
