Residents Turn Up in Large Numbers for Municipal Tax Collection Drive

Date:

A special municipal tax collection campaign organized by the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipality drew an encouraging response from residents, resulting in collections exceeding Rs 1.9 crore. The initiative, part of the civic body’s ongoing efforts to enhance revenue generation and promote civic participation, was conducted simultaneously at two key community halls, Haddo Community Hall Ratri Niwas in Wards 1 and 2, and Anarkali Community Hall in Ward 3.

The campaign was designed to make tax payment more convenient for citizens, bringing municipal services closer to neighborhoods and encouraging compliance. The Municipality reported that the total amount collected during the drive stood at Rs 1,99,88,260, reflecting the active involvement of the community in supporting local governance and infrastructure upkeep.

Officials noted that the campaign aimed to simplify the process for taxpayers who often face challenges visiting municipal offices during working hours. By setting up temporary collection counters at community centers, the civic body hoped to improve accessibility and strengthen citizen engagement. The turnout, they said, underscored a growing awareness among residents about the importance of timely tax payments in sustaining essential urban services such as waste management, sanitation, and street maintenance.

Building on the success of the latest campaign, the municipality has announced the next phase of the initiative for November 15. The upcoming drive will take place at Marine Hall Community Hall in Ward 4 and at the JE-III Site Office in Mohanpura. The event will continue the administration’s mission to ensure all pending municipal taxes are collected efficiently before the close of the financial year.

Officials have expressed appreciation for the cooperation shown by the public, emphasizing that community participation is the cornerstone of effective municipal governance. The civic body also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining transparency and ease in payment procedures, noting that these special drives not only aid in revenue collection but also strengthen the relationship between citizens and local authorities.

In recent months, Sri Vijaya Puram Municipality has been actively exploring innovative methods to increase revenue without burdening taxpayers. Initiatives such as online payment systems, public awareness campaigns, and simplified billing formats have been introduced to streamline transactions and reduce delays. The current community-based approach adds another layer of accessibility, enabling even senior citizens and working professionals to contribute without logistical hurdles.

The strong response from residents reflects a growing civic consciousness in the region. For many citizens, the event served as both a convenience and a reminder of their shared responsibility in maintaining civic amenities. The municipality views these efforts as a long-term investment in developing a financially sustainable and citizen-driven urban ecosystem.

With the next round of collections scheduled within a week, officials hope to surpass the current figure and further expand participation across remaining wards. By blending accessibility with accountability, the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipality aims to strengthen its financial base and enhance its ability to deliver better infrastructure and services to its residents.
