Sri Vijaya Puram, June 30: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) treated 516 animals and conducted a scientific pig farming training programme for tribal farmers during a one-day veterinary health camp at Harminder Bay in Little Andaman, strengthening livestock healthcare services and promoting sustainable animal husbandry practices in the island region.
The programme brought together local tribal farmers and livestock owners for veterinary care and capacity-building activities aimed at improving animal health and encouraging scientific farming practices suited to local conditions.
During the veterinary health camp, veterinary teams examined and treated a total of 516 animals belonging to different livestock categories. The services included on-the-spot clinical examination, treatment, deworming, vaccination and distribution of essential medicines for animals brought by farmers.
According to the Department, the camp covered 177 pigs, 266 poultry birds, 51 goats and 22 dogs. Veterinary personnel provided preventive and curative healthcare services to the animals as part of efforts to improve livestock productivity and disease management in the area.
Alongside the health camp, the Department organised a special awareness and training programme on scientific pig farming, with 20 tribal participants attending the session. The initiative focused on equipping livestock owners with practical knowledge to improve pig rearing practices under local island conditions.
The training programme covered scientific methods of pig farming, including modern pig rearing techniques, balanced nutrition, disease prevention and management, proper housing practices, biosecurity measures and profitable backyard pig farming models suitable for Little Andaman.
Officials highlighted the importance of adopting scientific livestock management practices to improve animal health, reduce disease risks and enhance the productivity of backyard pig farming. The programme sought to strengthen awareness among tribal farmers about sustainable pig farming practices while supporting improved livestock management.
The veterinary health camp formed part of the Department’s continued outreach to extend veterinary healthcare and technical guidance to livestock owners in remote island areas. By combining veterinary treatment with awareness and training, the initiative aimed to improve access to animal healthcare services while promoting scientific livestock farming among local communities.
The Department stated that the programme witnessed active participation from tribal farmers and livestock owners, reflecting continued community engagement in veterinary health initiatives and scientific livestock management practices in Little Andaman.
