Hut Bay, October 22: Authorities in Little Andaman have identified two potential sites for disposing of pig carcasses and called for heightened vigilance at Hut Bay Jetty and Helipad as part of preparations to prevent the introduction and spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) among the island’s pig population.
The measures were discussed during an awareness camp organised by the Panchayat Samiti, Little Andaman, in coordination with the Veterinary Department at the Panchayat Samiti Hall in Hut Bay.
Officials stressed the need to monitor passengers arriving from Sri Vijaya Puram and the Nicobar zone, with particular attention to sanitation, hygiene and precautionary measures at the island’s entry points.
According to information presented at the camp, approximately 85% of Little Andaman’s pig population is concentrated in Harminder Bay and adjoining areas. Another 10% is located in the Hut Bay–Netaji Nagar area, while the remaining 5% is distributed across VK Pur and nearby localities.
The distribution prompted discussions on area-specific preparedness and preventive measures, particularly in locations with higher concentrations of pigs.
As part of contingency planning, authorities have identified a site on Revenue land near Harminder Bay for possible burial or cremation of pig carcasses. A second location near the Red Oil Palm area has been proposed for pigs from VK Pur and surrounding areas.
The concerned departments will jointly inspect both locations to assess their suitability before taking further action under directions from the competent authorities.
During the technical session, the Senior Veterinary Officer, Hut Bay, explained the disease’s symptoms, modes of transmission and preventive measures to pig farmers, livestock owners, Panchayati Raj Institution representatives and other participants.
The Pramukh of Panchayat Samiti, Little Andaman, called for coordination among administrative agencies, veterinary officials, local institutions and residents to strengthen disease prevention.
Participants were advised to maintain sanitation and biosecurity at pig-rearing premises and report suspected cases promptly.
Officials also cautioned against circulating unverified claims about ASF through social media or informal channels.
Residents were asked to verify information concerning suspected infections, restrictions and control measures with the Senior Veterinary Officer, Hut Bay, or the Block Development Officer, Little Andaman.
The Panchayat Samiti urged livestock owners to follow official advisories and maintain vigilance against the disease.
