Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct. 7: The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has approved an ice production and cold storage facility at Kamorta for the Nancowrie group of islands and an old age home at Diglipur for identified orphaned elderly persons, Lt. Governor Dinesh Sharma approved the two proposals on October 6.
The fisheries project is aimed at strengthening post-harvest handling and preservation of fish for Nicobari fishing communities in the Nancowrie group. The approved Ice Plant and Cold Storage facility will include an Ice Production Unit at Kamorta.
Once implemented, the facility will provide access to improved ice-making infrastructure for fishermen in Teressa, Chowra, Katchal and other nearby islands. The project is expected to help reduce post-harvest losses, improve fish preservation and marketing, and support the livelihoods and socio-economic conditions of the fishing community.

The proposal addresses a specific infrastructure requirement for fishing activity in the island group, where access to ice-making facilities is linked to the preservation and marketing of fish after harvest.
The second approval concerns the construction of an Old Age Home at Diglipur for identified orphaned elderly persons from North and Middle Andaman. The proposed facility will include 10 rooms, a hall and a boundary wall.
The project will provide accommodation for the identified senior citizens, with the stated objective of offering them a safe and dignified place to stay.
The two approvals cover distinct areas of public welfare, with one focused on fisheries infrastructure in the Nancowrie group and the other on residential support for elderly persons in North and Middle Andaman.
The decisions were approved by the Lt. Governor, Dinesh Sharma, on October 6, according to a press release issued by Lok Niwas.
The fisheries facility at Kamorta will serve the Nancowrie group, including Teressa, Chowra and Katchal, while the Diglipur project will cater to identified orphaned elderly persons from North and Middle Andaman.
The approvals mark the Administration’s decision to take forward both proposals concerning fishing-related infrastructure and accommodation for elderly residents.
