Sri Vijaya Puram, June 5: A fishing boat worker sustained serious injuries after he was allegedly attacked with deadly weapons during a late-night altercation aboard a vessel at Junglighat Fish Landing Centre, leading to the arrest of two accused who have since been remanded to judicial custody.
The incident occurred on May 18 at around 10.50 pm on fishing boats anchored at Junglighat. The injured worker, a 22-year-old labourer from Tamil Nadu who had recently arrived in the islands for employment in the fishing sector, was working aboard a fishing vessel operating from the Fish Landing Centre.
The worker had gone to a neighbouring boat to ask for pan when a verbal altercation allegedly broke out with one of the crew members. The dispute quickly escalated, and another individual allegedly joined the confrontation.
During the assault, one of the accused allegedly attacked the worker’s right hand with a dao (machete), causing a deep cut injury and bleeding from his finger. Moments later, the second accused allegedly struck him on the head with a dao, resulting in serious head injuries.
The victim alleged that both men attacked him with deadly weapons, including a dao, knife and boat anchor, with the intention to kill.
Following the incident, Aberdeen Police registered an FIR under relevant provisions relating to attempt to murder and launched an investigation.
During the course of the investigation, both accused were apprehended and produced before the court. They have been remanded to judicial custody pending further proceedings.
The investigation is focused on establishing the complete sequence of events that led to the attack and gathering evidence related to the weapons allegedly used in the assault. Authorities are also recording statements from persons associated with the fishing vessels and the Fish Landing Centre.
The incident has drawn attention to disputes among workers employed in the fishing sector, where labourers from different parts of the country often live and work in close proximity aboard vessels operating from the islands.
Further investigation is underway.
