Iran and US Signal Possible Indirect Talks Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Date:

New York, April 25: Iran and the United States are indicating a cautious reopening of indirect communication channels as diplomatic tensions continue over the Strait of Hormuz, maritime security, and ongoing economic and naval restrictions between the two countries.

The development comes as separate diplomatic delegations from Tehran and Washington are reported to be moving toward Pakistan for high-level consultations, raising the possibility of indirect exchanges through third-party intermediaries rather than direct engagement.

According to officials and diplomatic signals, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Pakistan for consultations involving regional stakeholders, including Oman and Russia, as Tehran continues to avoid direct negotiations with the US under current conditions. At the same time, a US delegation involving senior figures, including Jared Kushner and Special Representative Steve Witkoff, is also expected to travel to the region.

However, Iran has officially ruled out any direct meeting with US representatives. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that no direct talks are scheduled and that Iran’s positions will instead be conveyed through Pakistani channels if required.

The diplomatic movement follows a stalled round of negotiations earlier in the month and comes amid heightened tensions over maritime activity in the region. The Strait of Hormuz has been reported closed by Iran, while US actions have included a blockade affecting Iranian ports. Both sides have also accused each other of seizing vessels in the region, further escalating the situation.

The US has maintained that discussions remain possible through indirect formats. White House officials indicated that US envoys are prepared to engage in exploratory talks in Pakistan, with senior American leadership including the President, Vice President, and Secretary of State awaiting updates from the delegation.

US spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that the American team would “hear the Iranians out,” suggesting continued interest in backchannel communication. She also noted that limited progress had been observed from the Iranian side in recent days, although no formal breakthrough has been confirmed.

Previous attempts at indirect negotiations, including in Geneva mediated by Oman, failed to produce results amid rising regional tensions and subsequent military escalation. The current approach appears to mirror those earlier efforts, relying on intermediaries rather than direct dialogue.

Analysts note that internal divisions within Iran’s leadership structure may also be influencing the pace and tone of diplomacy, with differing positions emerging between moderate and hardline factions on engagement with the US. While some officials have signalled openness to limited communication, others continue to oppose engagement under existing conditions.

Russia’s role remains a parallel factor, with reports indicating continued diplomatic and logistical support to Iran, including consultations that may shape Tehran’s broader strategic positioning.

As the situation develops, both sides appear to be maintaining pressure while simultaneously exploring controlled diplomatic channels, keeping the possibility of indirect negotiations open amid ongoing regional uncertainty.
