Sri Vijaya Puram, May 4: In a major enforcement action, authorities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands seized 140 LPG cylinders during a surprise inspection at Bimblitan village, uncovering illegal hoarding and unsafe storage practices that posed a significant risk to public safety.
The operation, conducted on April 25, 2026, was led by the Enforcement Team of the Department of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, in coordination with Indian Oil Corporation Limited and the Andaman and Nicobar Police. Officials discovered a large stockpile of both filled and empty LPG cylinders stored within a residential premises in violation of safety norms.
Authorities confirmed that a total of 140 cylinders were found stacked in an unauthorized manner, raising concerns about potential fire hazards and risks to nearby residents. The storage of such highly combustible material in a residential locality was described as extremely dangerous and irresponsible.

Officials stated that the act constitutes a clear violation of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, which governs the production, supply, and distribution of essential commodities to ensure public welfare and prevent hoarding.
Following the raid, the seized cylinders were safely transported to an authorized LPG storage facility to mitigate immediate risks. Authorities have also initiated legal proceedings against those involved, with further investigation underway to determine the extent of the operation and possible links within the supply chain.
The administration reiterated its strict “zero tolerance” stance on illegal hoarding and misuse of LPG, emphasizing that such activities not only disrupt the equitable distribution of essential commodities but also endanger lives. Officials warned that stringent action will continue against violators.
The incident comes amid broader concerns about LPG supply and distribution in remote island regions, making enforcement measures critical to maintaining balance in availability and safety.
Residents have been urged to adhere strictly to safety guidelines while handling LPG cylinders and to avoid participating in or supporting unauthorized storage practices. Authorities also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to LPG misuse.
To facilitate prompt reporting and grievance redressal, a dedicated 24×7 Control Room has been established at the Directorate of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs. Citizens can report complaints or illegal activities through the toll-free number 1800-345-3197 or via telephone at 03192-230337.
Officials noted that community cooperation remains vital in preventing such violations and ensuring the safe and fair distribution of essential commodities across the islands.
