PM Modi to Attend G7 in Canada, Countering Diplomatic Snub Allegations

Invitation to G7 Summit reinforces India’s strategic role on the world stage despite opposition criticism.

Date:

In a significant diplomatic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted an official invitation from newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, later this month. The confirmation comes shortly after opposition leaders, particularly from the Congress party, accused the government of a foreign policy failure over India’s purported exclusion from the summit.

PM Modi shared the news via social media platform X, writing: “Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests.”

This development directly contradicts recent statements by senior Congress leaders. On June 3, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had labelled India’s non-invitation a “big diplomatic bungle,” while Supriya Shrinate remarked that “even countries like Canada no longer invite India,” drawing comparisons to the praise India received under then-PM Manmohan Singh at past global forums.

Political analysts now argue that such conclusions were premature and lacked context, pointing out that invitations to major summits like the G7 often follow a sequence of diplomatic communications rather than immediate public announcements. They further noted that criticism based on speculation can distort public understanding of foreign policy dynamics.

India’s renewed invitation underlines its sustained relevance on the global stage, particularly amid current geopolitical shifts, economic challenges, and climate crises. The move reinforces New Delhi’s track record of being invited as a special guest to past G7 summits, hosted by different nations.

The invitation is also seen as a reflection of India’s resilient foreign policy and its strategic engagement with global partners. As Modi prepares to attend the summit, the episode underscores the intricacies of international diplomacy and the importance of measured political discourse on foreign relations.
