Fisheries Department Steps Up Awareness Among Coastal Communities

Date:

Outreach and awareness programmes were organised by the Fisheries Department across different parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to disseminate information on welfare schemes, sustainable fishing practices and support measures available to fishing communities. The initiative formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen engagement with fishers and enhance awareness at the grassroots level.

The programmes were conducted in coastal and fishing-dependent areas, enabling direct interaction with fishers and associated workers. Officials associated with the initiative said the outreach was designed to ensure that information related to departmental schemes and regulatory measures reaches beneficiaries in an accessible manner.

During the sessions, participants were informed about various fisheries-related schemes aimed at supporting livelihoods, improving infrastructure and enhancing income security. The focus was on explaining eligibility criteria, application procedures and the importance of compliance with guidelines governing fishing activities.

Sustainable fishing practices formed a key component of the outreach. Fishers were sensitised to the need for responsible resource use, adherence to seasonal regulations and conservation-oriented practices. Officials emphasised that sustainable approaches are essential for maintaining fish stocks and ensuring long-term livelihood security for coastal communities.

The outreach also addressed issues related to safety at sea and basic precautionary measures. Participants were encouraged to adopt safe operational practices and remain informed about advisories and regulations issued by the department.

Officials noted that effective communication with fishing communities is critical in geographically dispersed regions such as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. By organising on-site programmes, the department aimed to reduce information gaps and strengthen trust between the administration and fishers.

The interactive format of the sessions allowed participants to raise concerns related to fishing operations, scheme implementation and regulatory requirements. Organisers observed that such exchanges help identify practical challenges faced by fishers and provide inputs for improving programme delivery.

The Fisheries Department has been undertaking similar outreach activities as part of its routine engagement with stakeholders. Officials said the current initiative aligns with broader objectives of promoting sustainable fisheries management and inclusive development.

By combining awareness on welfare schemes with guidance on sustainable practices, the department aims to balance livelihood support with conservation priorities. The outreach is expected to contribute to improved compliance with regulations and more informed participation by fishers in departmental programmes.

The programmes concluded with officials reiterating the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation between the department and fishing communities. The administration indicated that outreach and awareness initiatives will remain an ongoing feature of fisheries management efforts in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
