Sri Viajya Puram, July 7: Dr. Sheela Mathews, former Medical Superintendent of GB Pant Hospital and a respected figure in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands’ healthcare sector, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2025, at 5:00 PM in Trivandrum, Kerala. She was a retired officer of the Directorate of Health Services, A&N Administration.

Her final rites are scheduled for 3:00 PM on Tuesday, July 8, at the Snehathiram Chapel located within the Mar Evanius Campus in Nalamchira, Trivandrum.

A stalwart of the Islands’ public health system, Dr. Mathews held multiple key roles during her decades-long service, most notably heading GB Pant Hospital, considered the cornerstone of medical care in the Islands. Known for her unwavering discipline, compassion, and administrative acumen, she earned the respect of both colleagues and patients.

During her tenure as Medical Superintendent, GB Pant Hospital witnessed major improvements in administration, infrastructure, and overall patient care. Former associates recall her as a quiet yet determined leader who prioritized ethical practices and patient welfare above all.

Dr. Mathews’ professional accomplishments were marked by personal tragedy, the untimely death of her only son, Ajay Mathews, a medical student, in an accident. Despite the profound loss, she continued to serve the Islands with resilience, often cited as a source of strength and grace within the medical community.

News of her passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes across social media and healthcare forums. Many have referred to her as “a pillar of GB Pant” and “a mother figure in white,” reflecting the profound impact she had on lives across the Islands.

As condolences pour in from Sri Vijaya Puram and beyond, her legacy remains etched in the memories of countless patients, colleagues, and young professionals she mentored.

The Wave Andaman joins the island community in mourning the loss of Dr. Sheela Mathews, a beacon of integrity, compassion, and service.
