New Delhi, Oct 10: Social media influencer Dhruv Rathee was detained by Gurugram Police from his residence on Saturday morning ahead of a proposed protest by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, as authorities tightened security at the national Capital’s borders and key locations.
According to a post on the CJP’s account on X, around 50 police personnel in plain clothes reached Rathee’s residence in Gurugram at about 8 a.m. and took him into custody. The supplied account did not specify the grounds for his detention.
Rathee had attended a protest in Bengaluru on Thursday against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He was scheduled to join the CJP’s proposed demonstration at Jantar Mantar later on Saturday against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Delhi Police stepped up security ahead of the planned gathering, with checks at entry points to the national Capital and additional deployment at sensitive locations. Police personnel were equipped with body cameras to record incidents during the demonstration, while security arrangements were strengthened outside the residences of Gyanesh Kumar and Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
At the Aya Nagar border, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anant Mittal reviewed security arrangements as personnel checked vehicles entering New Delhi. Police said the checks aimed to prevent unauthorised persons from entering the area ahead of the protest.
Speaking to IANS, Mittal said authorities had made security arrangements across Delhi, including the South district, and deployed personnel at inter-state and inter-district borders. He said police were checking vehicles to prevent unauthorised entry and maintain public order.
Drone surveillance was also underway at key locations, including New Delhi Railway Station, where Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed. Security marches were conducted across the station premises as drones monitored the area.
Several Metro stations, including Supreme Court and Mandi House, were closed as part of the security measures ahead of the proposed demonstration.
The developments came amid heightened security in the Capital as the CJP prepared to hold its protest against the Chief Election Commissioner.
