Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 25: Students of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (DBRAIT) gained practical exposure to harbour infrastructure and construction practices through a site-cum-educational visit to the ALHW Dry Dock, linking classroom learning with real-world civil engineering work.
The visit, organised by the Department of B.Tech Civil Engineering, focused on helping students understand the execution of specialised harbour and marine infrastructure. During the programme, D. K. Pandey, DCE, ALHW, conducted an on-site practical session covering harbour works, with particular emphasis on deep foundations and pile foundations.
Students subsequently undertook a guided inspection of the site, where they observed construction methodology, execution practices and safety measures while gaining exposure to the practical challenges involved in engineering projects. The field-based learning provided students an opportunity to relate civil engineering concepts studied in the classroom to their application at an operational infrastructure site.

The programme was coordinated by Altamash Mustafa, HOD, B.Tech Civil Engineering, DBRAIT, as part of the department’s focus on Outcome-Based Education (OBE), the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and experiential learning.
The initiative also received encouragement from Prof. (Dr.) Sanmukh Kaur, Principal, DBRAIT, whose emphasis on experiential, industry-oriented and field-based learning supports academic activities aimed at strengthening students’ professional competencies.

The department said the exposure helped create a practical link between academic instruction and professional engineering practice, particularly in the specialised field of harbour and marine infrastructure. Such field engagement enables civil engineering students to develop a clearer understanding of construction processes, foundation systems, site execution and safety practices alongside their formal classroom education.
The visit thus formed part of DBRAIT’s effort to integrate practical exposure with academic learning and prepare students for the technical requirements of professional civil engineering.
