MP Launches Road and Drainage Projects Across Multiple Wards in Islands

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), April 13: Member of Parliament Bishnu Pada Ray on Monday laid foundation stones for a series of road development projects across multiple wards under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), aimed at strengthening connectivity and drainage infrastructure in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The projects cover resurfacing, widening and drainage upgrades in several parts of the municipal area. Among the key works, a project in Ward No. 03 includes resurfacing of the road from Community Hall to Foreshore Road, along with repair work from Keshav Murthy’s house to the Sub Division-I (Works) SVPMC office, incorporating the construction of a culvert and roadside drains, with an allocation of ₹56.39 lakh.

In Ward No. 09, resurfacing and widening of the blacktop road from ALHW Gate to Ram Mandir at Junglighat has been approved at a cost of ₹56.73 lakh. Another project in Ward No. 01 involves resurfacing and widening the stretch from Durga Prasad’s house to Ahmed Shop, with a sanctioned amount of ₹58.68 lakh.

Additionally, fisheries colony road in Ward No. 01 will undergo resurfacing along with renovation of roadside drains and construction of cross drains with gratings, with an outlay of ₹21.89 lakh. Another road development project has also been taken up from Lord Ganesh Mandir via Lord Shiv Mandir to Shree Ram Mandir at Baba Bijan in Ward No. 15, Dairy Farm.

Officials said the projects are designed to improve road conditions and strengthen drainage systems, addressing long-standing civic concerns related to connectivity and waterlogging in these areas.

The foundation laying programme was attended by SVPMC Chairperson S. Shahul Hameed, Secretary Kamaleshwar Rao S, and ward councillors including Ramzan Ali and V. Ravi Chandran.

Authorities stated that these works under CRIF are part of broader efforts to upgrade urban infrastructure and enhance public amenities. The projects are expected to improve ease of movement for residents and contribute to better urban management through improved drainage and road quality.
