Andaman & Nicobar Administration Highlights Digital Justice on National Consumer Day

Date:

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration marked National Consumer Day by underscoring the growing role of digital platforms in strengthening consumer grievance redressal and ensuring timely access to justice, aligning the observance with the national theme of “Efficient and Speedy Disposal through Digital Justice.”

The occasion was used to reiterate the importance of a transparent, technology-driven justice delivery system as consumer disputes increasingly intersect with digital transactions, online marketplaces, and service platforms. The administration highlighted that as India advances along the path of digital transformation, the need for efficient resolution of consumer grievances has become more critical than ever.

Digital justice mechanisms such as electronic filing of cases, virtual hearings, online submission of documents, and real-time tracking of complaints were identified as key tools that have significantly improved accessibility and responsiveness within the consumer protection framework. These measures, the administration noted, have reduced procedural delays and lowered barriers for consumers seeking redressal, particularly those located in remote or geographically dispersed regions like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The administration reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and promoting a fair and accountable marketplace, stressing that consumers play a central role in economic growth and market stability. It emphasised that protecting consumers from unfair trade practices, misleading information, and exploitation remains a core priority of governance.

Officials pointed out that sustained institutional reforms and proactive administrative measures are being pursued to ensure justice delivery systems remain both timely and accessible. The emphasis on digital platforms was presented as a step toward empowering consumers, upholding their dignity, and reinforcing public confidence in institutions designed to protect consumer welfare.

The administration also highlighted that the digitalisation of consumer dispute mechanisms aligns with broader governance objectives aimed at transparency and accountability. By leveraging technology, authorities aim to bring justice closer to citizens, making processes more inclusive and less dependent on physical presence or procedural complexity.

The observance of National Consumer Day was positioned as an opportunity to encourage wider adoption of technology-driven solutions among consumers, service providers, and redressal agencies alike. The administration called for collective efforts to embrace digital tools that ensure consumer justice is swift, equitable, and accessible across all sections of society.

The focus on digital justice was also linked to good governance principles, with officials noting that a digitally empowered consumer protection system is integral to building trust between citizens and regulatory institutions. The administration maintained that such systems not only resolve disputes efficiently but also act as deterrents against unfair practices by increasing transparency and accountability.

National Consumer Day is observed annually to raise awareness about consumer rights and responsibilities while highlighting the mechanisms available for grievance redressal. This year’s theme reflects a nationwide push toward integrating technology with legal and administrative frameworks, a shift that has gained momentum in recent years.

The administration concluded the observance by reiterating its commitment to strengthening consumer justice systems through continued digital innovation, capacity building, and responsive governance, positioning consumer empowerment as a cornerstone of a fair and inclusive society.
