Sri Vijaya Puram, May 13: Alagarswamy has been elected Chairman of the North & Middle Andaman Zilla Parishad for the 2026–2027 term after securing 9 out of 17 votes during the election process.
The victory was achieved with the support of Congress members along with backing from an Independent member, strengthening the party’s position in local self-governance institutions across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The Congress party described the result as a sign of increasing public support for what it termed “inclusive and people-centric politics” in the islands. Party leaders stated that the outcome reflects a changing political atmosphere in the region and growing support for Congress at the grassroots level.

The development comes months after the visit of Rahul Gandhi to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in April 2026. According to Congress leaders, the visit helped energise party workers and expand outreach efforts across various parts of the islands.
With the latest victory, Congress now holds two Zilla Parishad Chairman positions in the islands along with the Chairmanship of the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council.
Party leaders said the recent electoral gains indicate growing support for issues related to democracy, development and secular values in the islands. Congress workers also termed the result as an important organisational boost ahead of future political activities in the Union Territory.

The North & Middle Andaman Zilla Parishad election is being viewed as politically significant due to the role local bodies play in rural governance, development planning and implementation of welfare schemes in the region.
Congress leaders expressed confidence that the party would continue strengthening its presence across the islands through grassroots engagement and local governance initiatives.
