Sri Vijaya Puram, Sep 17: Campbell Bay police arrested a man after allegedly recovering 5.82 grams of ganja and 1.89 grams of methamphetamine during a search near Fish Landing Jetty on September 16.
The accused was identified as Akash Gusai, 24, a private worker from Shastri Nagar, Campbell Bay. Police intercepted him at about 3.55 pm on the link road leading to the jetty after receiving information that he was allegedly carrying narcotic substances.
According to the police report, the information was received by Campbell Bay Police Station at about 2.40 pm. The informer reportedly told police that Gusai would arrive by MV Nalanda from Sri Vijaya Puram carrying narcotic substances. The information was recorded and conveyed to SDPO Campbell Bay Samuel Fred, who directed the police station to conduct a search.

A police team subsequently proceeded to the area and was joined by two independent witnesses for the search and seizure proceedings. Police said Gusai arrived on a motorcycle as a pillion rider with another person, who was identified as Rahul Nair. Nair told police that he had come to pick up Gusai from RCC Jetty and drop him at his residence.
Police informed Gusai about the information received against him and his legal rights under Section 50 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. He opted to have his personal search conducted in the presence of the SDPO.
During the search, police allegedly recovered a concealed plastic pouch from Gusai’s underwear. The pouch contained dried flowering buds suspected to be ganja. A preliminary test using a Drug Detection Kit indicated the substance as ganja, which weighed 5.82 grams.
Police then searched the blue backpack carried by Gusai and allegedly recovered another pouch containing a crystalline substance wrapped in paper. A preliminary test indicated the substance to be methamphetamine. It weighed 1.89 grams.
The seized substances were packed separately, sealed and taken into possession in the presence of the independent witnesses. Police said the search and seizure proceedings were videographed and uploaded to the e-Sakshya app.
Gusai was formally arrested at about 4.30 pm after completion of the required legal formalities. Police booked him under Sections 22(a) and 20(b)(ii)(A) of the NDPS Act. The seized substances were subsequently deposited with the malkhana at Campbell Bay Police Station.
