Himanta Biswa Sarma Says Assam Govt Formation After May 11, Swearing-In Delayed

Date:

Summary

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said the formation of the new BJP-led government and swearing-in will take place only after May 11, following completion of constitutional procedures. After poll results were notified, he resigned and the Governor accepted it, asking the ministry to continue as caretaker. The BJP Legislature Party will elect its leader before the NDA stakes claim to form the government.

Guwahati, May 6: The formation of the new BJP-led government in Assam will take place after May 11, with the swearing-in ceremony expected only after completion of constitutional and organisational processes, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday.

The announcement followed Sarma’s resignation after the Election Commission formally notified the Assembly election results. He submitted his resignation along with that of his Council of Ministers to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, in line with established democratic procedures.

Sarma also recommended the dissolution of the outgoing Assam Legislative Assembly. The Governor accepted both the resignation and the recommendation, directing the outgoing ministry to continue in a caretaker capacity until the new government is formed.

The Chief Minister stated that the caretaker government will oversee administrative continuity during the transition period. He indicated that while there are discussions about a possible swearing-in on May 12, the ceremony will not be held before May 11, though the exact date remains unconfirmed.

The process of government formation will begin with a meeting of the BJP Legislature Party, which will be conducted in the presence of central observers, including former BJP national president J.P. Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. During this meeting, the party will elect its legislative leader.

Following the selection, a meeting of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislators will formally endorse the chosen leader. The Governor will then invite the elected leader to form the government, completing the constitutional requirement for government formation.

Sarma said decisions regarding the composition of the new Council of Ministers will be taken only after these steps are concluded. The date for the BJP Legislature Party meeting is expected to be announced by the party’s central leadership.

The BJP-led NDA secured a clear majority in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, ensuring its return to power. The outcome paves the way for the formation of a new government under the alliance, subject to procedural formalities.

The transition underscores the structured process of government formation following elections, where resignation of the outgoing government, selection of legislative leadership, and formal invitation by the Governor are key steps before the new administration takes office.
