IMD Warns of Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms in A&N Islands From Nov 20–25

Date:

The Islands are set to witness a spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from November 20 to 25, according to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The advisory includes warnings for strong winds reaching up to 50 kmph and rough sea conditions, particularly affecting the Andaman Sea.

Heavy rainfall between 7–11 cm is likely at several locations across the Islands on November 20, with Nicobar expected to receive heavier intensity rain between 7–20 cm on November 21 and 22. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning are expected throughout the week, prompting caution among commuters and fishermen.

Due to deteriorating marine conditions, the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) has informed passengers that Mainland, Inter-Island and Foreshore vessels may face sudden cancellations or suspensions. Harbour and vehicle ferry services between Chatham, Bambooflat, Dundas Point, Hopetown and Phoenix Bay may also experience short-notice disruptions.

Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the Andaman Sea until November 23, with Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 hoisted at Sri Vijaya Puram Port. Sea conditions are expected to remain rough, with surface winds of 35–45 kmph gusting up to 55 kmph.

Passengers have been urged to stay updated via the DSS information counter at Phoenix Bay (03192-245555 / 232714) or the toll-free line (1800-345-2714).
