Andaman Sports Department Hosts Open Table Tennis Knockout Event

The Department of Sports, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, organized the Men and Women Open Table Tennis Knockout Tournament on October 11 and 12 at the Multipurpose Hall, Netaji Stadium. The tournament aimed to promote sports among youth while steering them away from drug use and other negative influences.

The event was inaugurated by Gyan Sheel Dubey, Head of Office, Directorate of Education, who encouraged young participants to engage in sports activities. He assured that the Department of Sports would continue to organize similar events in the future to foster healthy competition and athletic growth among the youth.

The tournament witnessed spirited matches across both men’s and women’s categories. In the women’s final, the pair of Rashmi and Sherin emerged victorious over Deepanjali and Runa, with scores of 7-11, 12-10, 11-13, 11-17, 5-11, 11-7, and 8-11. Meanwhile, in the men’s category, Surya and Tabrez secured the title by defeating Deepak and Alok, with match scores of 11-7, 11-18, 7-11, 11-19, and 11-8.

The medal distribution ceremony was conducted by Mohd. Irshad Ahmed, Assistant Director (PE/Sports), Directorate of Education, who awarded medals to the winners and runner-up teams in both categories. The event highlighted the growing interest in table tennis among young athletes in the Islands, and underscored the administration’s commitment to promoting sports as a constructive avenue for youth engagement.

Officials emphasized that such tournaments not only enhance sporting skills but also foster discipline, teamwork, and a sense of community among participants. The Department of Sports continues to prioritize initiatives that encourage healthy lifestyles and provide platforms for youth to showcase their talent at regional and state levels.

The Men and Women Open Table Tennis Knockout Tournament successfully combined competitive spirit with community engagement, reinforcing the role of sports in youth development across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
